About Network Solutions Plus
Network Solutions Plus is an independent network design, implementation and training consultancy. As a team of dynamic and forward thinking IT experts we have a long and successful history of providing consultancy services to both the public and private sectors – small and large companies.
As we don’t directly supply or endorse any particular hardware products, we are able to look objectively at any IT issues and provide unbiased advice and guidance, with a choice of flexible options that deliver effective network solutions with tangible business benefits.
I started my career in IT in a break-fix, support environment mainly working on IBM and Compaq PCs & servers. I then progressed to network operating systems with Novell NetWare, becoming one of the first 50 Certified NetWare Engineers in the UK. My Novell certification got me a job with Hewlett-Packard in their organisation that provided both pre-sales and post-sales support to their channel partners. When that operation was centralised in Amsterdam in the mid-1990s, I worked directly within the marketing division for network products. That role had an element of partner training in it – although in those days training tended to be only at the time of new product releases rather than any structured certification paths.
I left HP to work with a reseller who was focused on both Cisco and HP and I then rounded out my skillset with two years with a telecomms company providing high bandwidth inter-site WAN solutions using mainly Cisco solutions, during which time I took Cisco certifications to CCDP level.
I have been working as a freelance network consultant since 2001 delivering a range of services:-
- Network design,
- Network audits,
- Network updates & enhancements,
- Technical authoring & documentation of solutions,
- Technical training services.
Currently about half of my time is taken up delivering Hewlett-Packard certified network training courses, covering switching, routing, wireless and network management applications to HP employees, channel partners and customers, throughout the UK & Europe.
The remainder of my work comes via several IT resellers who I have built relationships with over the past decade. I can therefore provide skills and expertise to either enhance their own offering perhaps in times of sickness or when under resourced; or wear their hat and provide services that they do not currently have. I am able to deliver these services to support projects in a very flexible manner; anything from half a day to weeks or even months and also at relatively short notice. As I do not sell hardware I am able to work happily alongside and supplement a resellers own services with no conflict of interest.
There are not many tier-1 networking vendors who’s products I have not developed solutions around including Cisco, Juniper, HP, Extreme, Cabletron/Enterasys, Fore Systems, Brocade and Arista. After providing consultancy services around Arista products for some months I decided I should get some certification and so I have recently added an Arista Certified Engineer badge to my collection. I currently hold HPE certifications for both the Aruba/ProCurve/Provision and ComWare ranges, I held Cisco to CCDP level before deciding not to dedicate two years of my life to gaining CCIE! At some time in the past I have held IBM networking certifications, Microsoft MCSE and further back in time Novell CNE.
